Nico Robin
Nico Robin has been hunted since she was eight years old. The World Government destroyed her home — the island-city library of Ohara — because the scholars there had learned how to read the Poneglyphs, the only surviving records of the Void Century, a hundred-year stretch the Government has spent 800 years erasing. Olvia, Robin's mother, died with her classmates. Only Robin escaped. Her bounty was set higher than many pirate captains before she finished elementary school.
Twenty years of running. Every refuge betrayed her to the bounty hunters. Every ally eventually turned her in. By the time Luffy met her, she was working for Crocodile, had already stopped asking to live, and was functionally watching herself be killed in slow motion. The Straw Hats gave her something no one else had managed in two decades: a crew that did not turn her in.
Enies Lobby is where she finally said it out loud. "I want to live." The words, held in for 20 years, that triggered a war. The Buster Call arrived. Luffy burned the World Government flag. From that moment, Robin's story stopped being about outrunning death and started being about reading the world's oldest secrets — the history the Government has tried to bury with her. She's still the only person on the seas who can read Poneglyphs. She's why the crew will reach Laugh Tale.
